About
About Sound Attic
Free calculators for anyone turning a spare room or an attic into a place to record, mix or podcast.
What it does
Sound Attic works out the numbers behind a small studio: the room modes that make some bass notes boom, how long the room rings, where the first reflections land, how far speakers should sit from the walls, what two microphones do to each other, and how much storage a session needs. Lengths work in metres or feet and temperatures in °C or °F.
Where the numbers come from
Every formula and every table value is cited on the page that uses it, in a Sources section: standards such as ITU-R BS.1116-3, journal papers, textbooks, university pages and manufacturers’ data sheets. Where a calculator makes a choice of its own, such as a tolerance, the page says so. The acoustics formulas are simplified models of real rooms, and the pages say where they stop being reliable; a measurement in your own room always wins.
How it works
Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, there are no accounts and no cookies, and the tools keep working offline once a page has loaded. The site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies or cross-site tracking and never receives what you type into the tools. The privacy page has the details.
Who runs it
Sound Attic is one of a family of small, free tool sites. It carries no adverts. The footer links to a few sister sites and to two free services from the same owner, CleanTempMail and WebTraceCheck.
